Half Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana)

Half Moon Pose is a graceful balance of strength and openness. As you ground through one leg, the other lifts with lightness, while your chest and hips expand outward. This pose invites you to find steadiness in the midst of challenge, cultivating focus, stability, and a sense of spacious freedom all at once.

How to Do Half Moon Pose (Step-by-Step)

  1. Begin in Triangle Pose. Keep your front leg strong and your chest open to the side.
  2. Bend your front knee slightly. Place your right hand on the floor or a block in front of your right foot.
  3. Shift weight into the right foot as you lift your left leg, extending it straight back at hip height.
  4. Stack your left hip over the right hip.
  5. Extend your left arm upward, in line with your right arm, shoulders stacked vertically.
  6. Keep your gaze forward, up toward the hand, or down at the floor for balance.
  7. Hold for 5–8 breaths, then gently return to Triangle Pose and switch sides.

Benefits of Half Moon Pose

Common Mistakes & Tips

Variations & Modifications

Use a Block

Keep your gaze down toward the floor to support balance and focus. Place your lower hand on a yoga block to provide extra stability and ease tension in your back and hamstrings.

As your balance improves, gradually lift your gaze forward or upward and reduce the pressure on the block.

Half Moon with a Bind

From Half Moon Pose, bend your top knee and reach your top hand back to catch the foot or ankle. Gently draw the heel toward your glutes to create a deep stretch in the front of the thigh and hip. Keep your chest open and balance steady as you breathe deeply.

Release the bind slowly and return to Half Moon Pose before lowering the lifted leg.

Wall Support

Practice with your back or the lifted foot lightly touching a wall to refine your alignment and build confidence. Use the wall to help you stack your hips and shoulders evenly and maintain balance as you open your chest.

Over time, move slightly away from the wall as your stability and body awareness improve.

Embody the Pose
