Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II)

Warrior II is a pose of strength and presence. As your legs root firmly into the ground, your arms extend wide, opening the chest and shoulders with power and grace.

This posture invites you to stand tall with focus and determination, embodying stability not just in your body, but also in your mind. Think of Warrior II as a reminder of your inner resilience, a foundation you can return to again and again, both on and off the mat.

How to Do Warrior II (Step-by-Step)

  1. Begin in Mountain Pose, grounding evenly through both feet. Take a deep breath in, feeling your spine lengthen.
  2. As you exhale, step your feet wide apart.
  3. Inhale, turn your right foot out 90° so the toes point toward the front of the mat, and slightly turn your left foot inward.
  4. Exhale, align your front heel with the arch of your back foot.
  5. With your next inhale, extend both arms out to the sides at shoulder height, palms facing down.
  6. Exhale, bend your right knee until your thigh is nearly parallel to the floor, keeping your knee stacked directly above your ankle.
  7. Inhale, lift through your chest and lengthen your spine.
  8. Exhale, soften your shoulders and gaze (drishti) over your front hand.

Variations & Modifications

Supported Warrior II

Place a chair under your front thigh for support. Keep your front knee over the ankle, back leg extended, and torso upright.

This variation improves balance and alignment while reducing strain on the knees and hips.

Reverse Warrior

From Warrior II, keep your front knee bent and reach your front arm overhead, gently leaning back while resting your back hand on your leg. This variation opens the chest and side body, enhances flexibility through the spine, and strengthens the legs.

Bound Warrior II

A variation of Warrior II where the hands are clasped behind the back or bound under the front thigh. This version deepens the chest and shoulder opening while enhancing balance, focus, and flexibility in the hips and legs.
