A Morning Routine To Improve Your Lifestyle

In addition to being a California-based yoga teacher, Emily Meersand leads surf and yoga retreats around the world. Emily also runs her real estate investing business, and with all of that on her plate, a morning routine is essential to having a successful day.

An early start
I wake up at 6:30 am. The first thing I do when I get out of bed is I immediately drink one large glass of cold water. I also love drinking mushroom coffee in the morning, and my current favorite is MUD/WTR, which combines chai, turmeric, and mushrooms to increase focus. Plus, it tastes delicious!
Pump the jams
Next, I turn some music on to get the day going — typically on my record player or my yoga playlist for the week (check them out on Spotify).
Get moving
My favorite form of exercise to start my morning is an early sunrise surf. I’m fortunate enough to live steps from the beach, so on most mornings, my husband and I grab our surfboards and hop in the ocean. The feeling of jumping into cold water wakes me right up, and it feels so lovely to connect with nature at the beginning of the day. If we’re lucky, sometimes a pack of dolphins will swim by!
If the waves aren’t ideal surfing conditions, then I’ll roll out my yoga mat and practice for about 30 minutes. Getting the body moving before sitting down to work is so important to get the juices flowing.

Skincare & a minty mouth
Next up comes a steaming shower, followed by my morning skincare routine. I’m currently loving Ole Henriksen products, and the Vitamin C serums wake my skin up. A good teeth brush and floss with my favorite Cocofloss is also a must for feeling fresh for the day ahead.
Off to work
By 9 am, I’m at my desk, creating a checklist of all of my goals for the day. I find it much easier to accomplish my goals when I have the “miracle morning,” I mentioned above. Come to think of it; my yoga classes mirror my mornings! Each class incorporates breath, heat, and music. That’s what my mornings look like, too: breath (yoga/meditation), heat (morning surf or sweat), and music (bumpin’ in my headphones).
I highly encourage everyone to create their morning routine. There is a perfect morning routine that will make you happy and productive all day – you have to find the perfect one for you!
