Upward-Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana)

Upward-Facing Dog is an energizing heart opener that strengthens the arms, shoulders, and spine while expanding the chest and lungs. As you press into your palms and lift your heart forward, the body awakens with vitality and lightness.

This pose invites you to rise with confidence embodying strength, openness, and a renewed sense of energy.

How to Do Upward-Facing Dog (Step-by-Step)

  1. Begin lying face down on your mat with your legs extended straight behind you, tops of the feet pressing into the floor.
  2. Place your hands beside your lower ribs, elbows close to your body.
  3. Inhale and press into your palms, straightening your arms and lifting your chest and thighs off the mat.
  4. Roll your shoulders back and down, opening through the heart and collarbones.
  5. Keep your legs strong and engaged, thighs lifted, and kneecaps off the ground.
  6. Gaze softly forward or slightly upward, lengthening through the neck.
  7. Hold for 3-5 breaths, maintaining steady, even breathing.
  8. Exhale to release, lowering slowly back to the mat or transitioning into Downward-Facing Dog.

Holding the Pose

  • Distribute weight evenly between hands and tops of feet.
  • Engage your core and glutes to protect your lower back.
  • Keep elbows slightly soft – don’t lock the joints.
  • Lift through the sternum rather than collapsing into the shoulders.
  • Maintain an open, calm expression and breathe smoothly.

Benefits of Upward-Facing Dog

  • Strengthens arms, wrists, shoulders, and back
  • Opens chest, lungs, and front body
  • Increases spinal flexibility and posture awareness
  • Stimulates abdominal organs and improves digestion
  • Energizes the body, relieving fatigue and mild depression
  • Enhances flow transitions in vinyasa or sun salutation sequences

Common Mistakes & Tips

  • Shoulders scrunching toward ears: Draw shoulders down and away from your neck.
  • Thighs resting on the floor: Lift the thighs to activate the legs and core.
  • Collapsing lower back: Lengthen through the crown and engage abdominals to support the spine.
  • Elbows flaring out: Keep elbows hugging in close to the ribs for stability.

Variations & Modifications

With Blocks

Place yoga blocks under your hands to elevate your upper body and lessen wrist or shoulder strain. This setup encourages a broader chest opening and allows you to engage the back muscles with greater control.

Dynamic Flow

Move in and out of Upward Dog with your breath inhaling to lift and expand, exhaling to lower slightly. This rhythmic variation enhances spinal mobility, promotes fluid strength, and connects movement with mindful breathing.

Embody the Pose

Upward-Facing Dog invites you to rise with strength and openness. As you lift through the heart, feel the energy flowing through your body, supported by steady arms and an expansive breath. Embrace the balance between effort and ease, allowing each inhale to create space and each exhale to ground you. In this uplifting posture, reconnect with your inner vitality and the simple joy of movement.
